Newton Crypto Review

Newton has some of the lowest spread fees, a large selection of altcoins, and a simple UI design that is very easy to use. It is a safe, regulated, and legit crypto exchange for Canadians. Despite the rough verification process and sometimes spotty customer service — I use Newton as one of my main go-to exchanges.

I am writing this Newton review after using the exchange for about three years now. I have read the good and bad reviews on Reddit/social media — this has been my experience buying and selling crypto on Newton. This Newton review will break down everything you should know before signing up to Newton.

My conclusion: Newton crypto exchange is currently the ‘best all-around exchange’ for a majority of Canadians because of the combination of friendly easy-to-use interface design, low fees, multi-network support, and a large selection of altcoins to trade.

Newton has made several improvements to their platform in the last year. Most notable is a huge increase in positive user ratings on the Android app.

Fees

Deposits and withdrawals: $0

Spread: ~0.75-1.5%

Crypto withdraw fees: For cryptocurrency withdrawals, the first $5 of the withdrawal fee is covered, the rest of the withdrawal fee will be a cost incurred by the customer time of the transaction.

The variable amount will depend on the transaction and the blockchain fees at the time of the transaction.

I have yet to incur a network fee when sending crypto above the $5 network fee. that Newton covers. This probably would not be the case if I was buying or selling at peak times in the market.

Newton has some of the lowest fees in Canada for exchanging cryptocurrency and sending it to your wallet.

3. Click > Add Funds – to transfer CAD $ Dollars with Interac eTransfer

The navigation icons on the right side are where you can access your; settings, add funds, and withdraw for fiat or cryptocurrency.

You can see (image above) under the ‘Recent activity’ some of my recent buying crypto on Newton and sending it to my wallet. I blocked out some info for privacy.

On the app: Click > Transfer> Add Funds to send an Interac e-Tranfer request to instantly fund your Newton account.

Below (image) are some of my earliest account activity on the Newton exchange. My account was created 3 years ago, and I made my first crypto (BTC) purchase on Newton a few months later after I verified my account.

Portfolio Tracker

A new feature that Newton has recently added and that is currently in BETA mode is a built-in portfolio tracker.

This is a unique feature/functionality because in will show your gain or loss in percentage terms. It automatically does the math to and tracks your dollar cost average buy price to show the total gains or loss in percentage terms.

This will only work if you make all your buys/sells on Newton and leave your crypto on the exchange. I always send my crypto to my own wallet and self custody of my keys.

Reputation and Reliability

Newton has undergone a rigorous review and approval process with the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) and the other members of the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) and is one of a small number of registered crypto trading platforms registered to operate in Canada.

The registration process included extensive reviews of our internal financial, compliance, and security processes as well as requirements related to working capital, insurance, and the storage and custody of our customers’ fiat and crypto assets.

The CEO’s name is Dustin Walper and he answers questions on Reddit under the user name: ‘quackmeister’.

Security

Newton has a partnership with Balance, a professional third-party custodian that specializes in safeguarding your digital assets. Through Balance, Newton provides institutional-grade storage, with security from theft, fraud, and mishaps.

Newton is a registered money services business with FINTRAC in Canada (FINTRAC#: M19607029) and FinCEN in the United States.

Newton recently introduced a new, improved authentication system that supports more 2FA methods like hardware keys (Yubikey), authenticator apps (like Google Authenticator) and WebAuth.

Customer Service

When I contacted customer service through email they responded and fixed my problem and answered my questions. I have made quite a few transactions in the past three years — from buying/selling crypto, withdrawing crypto to my own wallet, or selling crypto and withdrawing Canadian dollars to my bank account instantly with the eTransfer option.

That being said they can definitely have issues responding to support tickets at peak time. On the Newton subreddit (r/newtonco) there will be an occasional Newton support ticket thread where the mods go through the unread or answered support tickets.

They have hired lots of new employees and made many improvements to the exchange since the crypto bull run. Hopefully, we get another bull run and 🙂 Newton will have solved these issues. Only time will tell.

Newton Alternatives

• NDAX – Recommended for traders.
• Netcoins – Similar fees to Newton.

Newton Review — Conclusion

I use Newton for the majority of buying and selling of crypto because of the low fees, lots of altcoins to choose from, multi-network support, and easy-to-navigate UI design.

Newton gets mixed reviews online. Newton is a fast-growing startup that might have occasional growing pains. They are hiring and improving the exchange on a regular basis.

After struggling through the initial verification process I have generally had a good experience buying and selling crypto on the Newton crypto exchange.

My questions to customer service were answered within 24 hours and they did fix any issues I had. I like using the desktop website to trade crypto or send it to my wallet.

Don’t leave money on the exchange, you should always send your crypto to a wallet you have control the backup keys.
